When you say that Johnny Cash is a “legend in his own time” and when you call him a “superstar,” you aren’t guilty of resorting to clichés—you are simply stating facts. What’s more, these facts have been true for a long time—since 1956 when Cash recorded “I Walk the Line” and instantly became the top Country music performer in the land—a distinction he has always held since.

His incredible drive and energy keep him going harder all the time (he does as many as 200 shows a year), and have not only kept him at the top in Country music, but also propelled him into the top ranks of recording stars regardless of music category.

Without compromise, Johnny Cash has converted hundreds of thousands of today’s youth to a love and respect for Country music. People listen to his powerful, craggy voice, whether Country music fans or not, because they can’t resist.

The performances on this album are among his best. The traditional Country songs, Nine Pound Hammer and the haunting Long Black Veil, have been done many times by many fine musicians because they are good songs—but no one does them better than Cash. Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right, one of Bob Dylan’s best, is compelling under the Cash treatment. I Still Miss Someone, written by Cash, is my favorite, not just among Cash’s songs, but in all of Country music.

Johnny Cash stands for an honesty in music that can only come from having lived it. Johnny Cash is his music, and his music is his heritage; they are inseparable.
