When in Rome...
Marisa Fiordaliso and Carlo Buti
Original Liner Notes
Two of Italy’s most popular and gifted singers combine their talents here. Marisa Fiordaliso of Modena and Carlo Buti of Florence are favorites not only of Rome but of all Italy, and their records and broadcasts have made them known, as well, to the French, the British, and the Spanish. Now their voices are heard together for the first time on records in North America.
The songs Marisa and Carlo offer here are the songs that Rome is singing. For in the face of Paris’ wide reputation as a cosmopolitan city, Rome too is approaching Paris as an artistic hub for great music, cinema, and artistic achievements of all kinds. One expects the versatile Miss Fiordaliso to sing a song from an American movie, or a French revue, for in Rome these days all is not strictly Italian. In Bricktop’s bistro, at the outdoor tables near the entrance of the Excelsior, along the stimulating Via Vittorio Veneto and on across the hilly Eternal City the popular music of the day emerges in various and varied shades, some of it from London, some from Hollywood, some from Napoli and Barcelona. But — with graceful and eloquent Italian lyrics — it comes out emphatically Roman. And that is what the team of Fiordaliso and Buti are offering in this album together.
Marisa not too many years ago headed up the “Trio Fiordaliso” with her sisters Maria Paola and Maria Antonietta. But marriages divided the girls and Marisa continued alone. She encountered little difficulty, singing with the best Italian orchestras (Dino Olivieri, Strappini, Mario Consiglio, Carlo Savina, Piero Rizza and Nello Segurini) and eventually winning the prized Silver Microphone award for her distinctive style and popularity.
Signor Buti, meanwhile, abandoned a career as a skilled worker with precious metals to embark, first, on a modest theater engagement that led to a new life in show business. So spectacular was his success in Italy that he then made a trial engagement at the Roma Theater on New York’s Broadway — a long, non-stop run which — by early 1956 — has seen him endure the Atlantic crossing 32 times for personal appearances!
Now Carlo and Marisa are together, singing the favorite songs of modern-day Rome with superb orchestral accompaniment. All selections were recorded for Capitol in Italy. When in Rome, they say, do as the Romans do. Listen to Fiordaliso and Buti.
